Yeah, if your rank gets reset - it's gone for good. Thankfully this will not be the case in GOW3.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get a level that was reset back to the level it was originally? I was soooooo close to getting those wings :/

I got my 100 rank last August, played gears 2 till black ops came out, the other day i popped gears 2 in, got the update and was reset too level one. At least I got the achievement
